III.  Remember Montezuma

 In the capstone of the dolmen arch that leads to the Grove of the Seers, a phrase has been chiseled: “Remember Montezuma.”

   Every fourth-grader knows what this means.  It is one of the lessons the world forgot before the Singularity, an object-lesson in what happened to a society that ceases to listen to its dreamers.  Before the Aztecs ever laid eyes on a European, people in Mexico were dreaming strange and terrible things.  They saw temples being burned, and cities destroyed.

The emperor Montezuma ordered the most respected dreamers to be brought before him.  Eyes cast to the floor, they told him of things they lacked words to describe, of fearsome mountains moving on the waves, of metal serpents spewing fire.  The emperor rewarded the dreamers by having them thrown into prison and starved to death exquisitely slowly.  After that, nobody wanted to tell Montezuma their dreams.      Montezuma succeeded in blinding his empire. When the mountains moving on the waters turned out to be the ships of the conquistadors, the Aztecs were completely unprepared. “Those who die are those who do not understand; those who live will understand it,” the Mayans wrote in their book of prophecies, the Chilam Balam.

     Because it is so remote, this story is less painful than that of the dreamers of our own families who were ignored before the Singularity. The message flashes from the distant mirror. If we can see the future, we may be able to change it for the better.

     Our dream seers are identified young, sometimes before they have started school. The first sign of the gift is usually quite simple: the child dreams an event that subsequently takes place. Or the child hears the voices of the speaking land, and receives messages from birds and animals.

      We understand that all of us are dreaming the future, all the time, and that we not only have prevision of coming events but are able to scout out alternative possible futures. All dreams are scanned for clues to the future. This is the most important function of the Stream. Every resident of our commonwealth is requested to enter a brief dream report in a home terminal every day, contributing to a Stream from which common themes and details are extracted by data spiders before they are reviewed by trained readers employed by the Grove.

       From the earliest possible age, we confirm for our children that dreaming the future is entirely natural. We also help them to understand that any future we can see, in dreams or in the workings of our seers, is a possible future and that it is often possible to change the odds on the manifestation of a specific future event. When it appears impossible for an individual to change certain future events perceived in dreams – like a natural disaster or death at an advanced age – the dream information can still be employed in a useful way: for example, to alert friends not to go on vacation in the place where the dreamed hurricane will hit, or to help someone whose death is near, and the family, to meet that situation with grace and closure.

Our dream seers not only travel to past and future; we travel between alternate timelines. We are constantly experimenting with the possibility that in this way we can help choose an event track – maybe one of infinite alternative possible event tracks – that will be followed in the world. In the language of B.S. physics, this could be represented as a case of the observer effect operating on a human scale. At quantum levels, the act of observation causes plucks a specific phenomenon out of a cauldron of possibilities. In our practice of dreaming: through the act of observation, we select a certain event track that will begin to be manifested in the physical world. By a fresh act of observation, or re-visioning, we can then proceed to alter that event track, or switch to an entirely different one.

 Access to the seers of Dreamland is immensely prized. We receive delegations from all the world powers, who come to us as the ancient envoys sailed to the oracle at Delphi to consult the source that “neither reveals nor conceals the truth, but signifies.” [10] Visiting deputations are closely observed by our Watchers. Outside powers are constantly seeking to undermine our neutrality, corrupt our seership, and steal our gifts. They have even attempted to kidnap some of our gifted children. We intend to substitute holo-conferencing for physical visits to Dreamland, and to insist that official traffic should be routed through a single agency, the National Office of Dreams (NOD) in each government with which we have a service contract.
